Arsenal vs Liverpool: Premier League Preview and Prediction
The Gunners need to keep pressure on Manchester United and beat Liverpool this weekend if they want any chance to win the title. Meanwhile, a resurgent Liverpool can move within two points of Tottenham, who currently sit in 5th place. Liverpool have never won at the Emirates Stadium. The last fixture was a 1-1 draw when the teams went head to head at Anfield in August. This will be a crucial, full throttle encounter that will hopefully see some attacking football and bring plenty of goals.Arsenal:
Arsenal could pull to just four points behind leaders United if they win on Sunday. The Gunners are on a 17 match unbeaten run in the Premier League, and have not lost in 2011. Arsenal must look to control the match, meaning Fabregas, Wilshere, and Nasri must possess the ball. In Arsenal’s last match at home they drew 0-0 to lonely Blackburn. The big uncertainty for Arsenal on Sunday will be their back four as they are tested against Liverpool’s new signings.
Arsenal have no new injuries, but will be without Sagna, who is still out with a knee injury and will not be fit to play. Thomas Vermaelen has returned to training, but is not match fit and will probably not play. Djourou and Wojceich are question marks, while Denilson and Song should be available.
These high-pressure games are the times that boys need to become men. For a few years now, Arsenal have been criticized for not having a winning mentality, for being too young, and losing the must wins. We will see on Sunday if the Gunners can stand up to the pressure of the title race.
Liverpool:
Liverpool trounced Man City at Anfield last Monday and will be heading into Sunday’s fixture renewed and full of confidence. Whether or not Arsenal’s shaky defense will be able to handle the crafty Suarez and the physicality of Carroll is a question mark. The two strikers look to have gelled nicely and are two players no central defender would like to face up against.
There should be no big changes in the Liverpool squad from the one that thrashed City 3-0 last week. John Flanagan, just 18 years old, will most likely start again at right back after making an impressive debut against Manchester City. Martin Kelly and Glen Johnson are both out with hamstring injuries. Defender Daniel Agger and captain Steven Gerrard are both out for the rest of the season.
Dalglish will hope to end Liverpool’s winless drought at the Emirates and could do so if they look as lively as they did against Man City.
