Cristiano Ronaldo nets two extraordinary set piece goals to equal Zarra and Hugo Sanchez's historic record

Villarreal 1-3 Real Madrid
Cristiano Ronaldo scored two extraordinary set piece goals against Villarreal that allowed him to equal Zarra and Hugo Sanchez's historic record of 38 strikes in one season in La Liga. He will have a chance to break it against Almeria. The Portuguese's incredible run during the present campaign makes him the favourite to win this year's Golden Boot award. Ronaldo's goals helped Real Madrid earn a sixth straight away victory with one game left in the championship.
Villarreal 1-3 Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho used Kaka and Benzema in his starting lineup, leaving Ozil and Di Maria on the bench. Real Madrid kept possession of the ball, forcing Villarreal to feel out of place on their own turf. Marcelo proved dangerous down the left win and eventually scored the opener from a great lobbed shot (16').

Villarreal 1-3 Real Madrid
The Whites scored a second strike only five minutes later: Kaka was tackled outside the box, a free-kick was awarded, and Ronaldo converted it with a spectacularly powerful shot.

Villarreal 1-3 Real Madrid
Things changed after half-time. Villarreal stepped up their game and kept possession of the ball for longer periods of time. This resulted in their only goal of the evening, scored by Cani following a great combination between Rossi and Bruno (51'). The match became intense, but Real Madrid looked to hurt their hosts with quick counterattacks, while Villarreal in turn tried to net an equaliser through efforts from Cani and Rossi. However, Ramos, Pepe and Carvalho were solid in defence and put an end to all of the locals' chances.

Villarreal 1-3 Real Madrid
There was still time for Cristiano Ronaldo to score yet another strike from another set piece. It came on the 92nd minute and allowed him to equal Hugo Sanchez and Zarra's historic record.

Guardiola: Madrid are favorites.

Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola may be many different things: A sharp dresser, a brilliant manager and a proven winner.

Leading into Wednesday’s opening leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals between Real Madrid and Barcelona at the Bernabéu, the Guardiola may have added another weapon to his arsenal: the master of the undersell.

With the exception of last week’s Copa del Rey final where Real Madrid toppled Barcelona 1-0 in extra time, Guardiola’s track record against Madrid has been near perfect. When Madrid and Barcelona tied 1-1 in La Liga play on April 16, it was the first time in Guardiola’s two-plus years leading the Catalans that Madrid earned a point against Barca.

Barcelona are perhaps the world’s most cohesive side and few think that Real Madrid posses the meddle to top Barca in a two-legged clash.

Except Guardiola. Instead, Guardiola decided to put the pressure on Los Blancos, admitting that they, not Barcelona, should be considered the favorites.

Guardiola told Marca:

"We accept that Madrid are in the role of favorites in the Champions League. I understand that is so, because they won the Copa and they are (playing) well. We are not in the best of conditions to play in the Bernabeu but we are fine emotionally. In the Bernabeu we will have to play very seriously and win the game.

We also accept the challenge. We have great faith in ourselves and I have faith more than anything in my players."

UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid vs. Barcelona Predictions—Madrid Will Triumph
Iker Casillas was brilliant in his last outing against Barcelona. Iker Casillas was brilliant in his last outing against Barcelona.
Manuel Queimadelos Alonso/Getty Images

Taking any team over Barcelona in a two-legged Champions League tilt would have seemed especially outlandish when you consider how dominant the Catalans have been this season.

When you throw in the absolute dismantling Barcelona put on Real Madrid in a 5-0 victory on Nov. 29, it was painfully obvious that Barcelona were by far the superior side.

But we're going against the grain on this one and picking a Manchester United vs. Real Madrid final at Wembley on May 28.

Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo rid themselves of a few Barcelona-related demons when Ronaldo headed in an extra-time winner and Madrid finally conquered an in-form Barcelona side. Since then, Madrid players have showered manager Jose Mourinho with praise for his tactical genius and how good of a job he's done handling a Madrid side overflowing with star power.

Let's not forget, Mourinho has conquered Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals before. And he did so without the talent he currently has at his disposal in Madrid.

Iker Casillas is unquestionably the world's best goalkeeper and was absolutely brilliant in Madrid's Copa del Rey triumph. We're guessing that he'll have another World Cup-like performance against Barcelona.

Prediction: Madrid wins at the Bernabéu 1-0 behind a goal from German Mesut Ozil. In the return leg the two rivals battle to a 1-1 draw with Barca's David Villa striking first and Cristiano Ronaldo again coming up with the winner to advance 2-1 on aggregate.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—The Dallas Mavericks keep catching the Trail Blazers off guard.

First it was Jason Kidd, then it was Peja Stojakovic—as if defending Dirk Nowitzki wasn’t enough.

Series Breakdown

The surprising success of those two veterans has put the Mavs in control as they head to Portland with a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series against the Blazers.

So it begs the question, who will break out for Dallas in Game 3 Thursday night at the Rose Garden? Jason Terry? Shawn Marion? Nowitzki said the Mavs have been trying to spread it around all season.

“We’ve been doing that second scorer by committee. Marion had a great finish to the season, Jet (Terry) has been there all season long and Peja was a great addition at the trade deadline because he’s still a great knockdown shooter,” Nowitzki said.

But even collectively, visiting the Rose Garden could pose a challenge for the Mavs. They split the regular season series against the Blazers, with each team winning on their home court twice.

Portland is 30-11 this season at the Rose Garden, winning 10 of their last 11. Overall against Dallas, the Blazers have a 46-18 advantage at home in the regular season, and they’re 6-1 in playoff games.

“We know that they (Portland) are a very good home team so we wanted to hold home court here and go up there with a 2-0 lead but this series is far from over,” Nowitzki said. “They play well at home, they make shots, and they play tough D so we’ve got to be prepared for a tough game on Thursday.”

Dallas is 2-1 overall when they’ve opened 2-0 in 15 previous best-of-7 series. The exception was the 2006 NBA Finals when the Miami Heat defeated the Mavericks in six games. The Heat were just the third team to claim a championship after trailing 0-2.

The last time Dallas and Portland met in the playoffs was 2003. The Mavs claimed the first three games before the Blazers won the next three. The Mavericks took the deciding game in Dallas.

The third-seeded Mavericks opened this year’s series with an 89-81 victory. Kidd had 24 points, including a playoff career-best six 3-pointers. Nowitzki had 28 points—18 in the fourth quarter alone—and 10 rebounds.

In a 101-89 Game 2 victory, Stojakovic tied his career playoff best with five 3-pointers and finished with 21 points, while Kidd pitched in 18. Nowitzki, showing more resolve than in the opener, finished with 33.

Dallas signed Stojakovic in January after he was waived by Toronto. He’d hardly played because of injuries.

“His shot-making was great and very timely, but his defense was better,” Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. “He just was really solid. He didn’t let anybody drive by him all night, which was huge, and he just played a terrific all-around game.”

Dallas is shooting 47 percent from 3-point range in the playoffs, as opposed to 36 percent in the regular season.

Obviously Portland will need to do a better job with perimeter defense in Game 3.

“We’ve got to do a better job of getting first control of the ball. The basketball is getting to the paint, which is forcing the defense to collapse, and we’re losing these guys on the three point line—Jason Kidd, Stojakovic,” coach Nate McMillan said.

And Portland needs to get more production out of their reserves. In Game 2, the Mavs’ backups outscored Portland’s 39-11. Nicolas Batum had 10 of those points, Rudy Fernandez had 1, and Brandon Roy and Patty Mills both went scoreless.

Roy’s role in particular was becoming something of an issue for the Blazers.

The three-time All-Star struggled during the regular season with knee issues, finally undergoing arthroscopic surgery on both knees in mid-January.

Upon his return, Roy struggled to find his place with the Blazers, who had moved on without him. The playoffs have intensified that problem. In Game 2 he played just eight minutes, missing his lone shot.

McMillan said he limited both Roy and Fernandez because Dallas was successful in defending them.

But Roy sparked controversy Wednesday in Portland with comments he made to The Oregonian newspaper after the game.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little hurt or disappointed,” Roy told the paper. “I just always thought I would be treated a little better. That was a little disappointing for me.”

The Blazers could do without the distraction as they prepare for Game 3. McMillan gave the team a break with a maintenance day on Wednesday.

“We will protect home! We know yall are with us,” Wesley Matthews posted on Twitter.

It certainly wasn’t all bad for the Blazers, who are getting production from their starting five. Dallas native LaMarcus Aldridge is averaging 25.5 points and eight rebounds in the first two games. Matthews and Gerald Wallace were solid in Game 2 after both had a shaky opener, and Andre Miller has been dependably solid with 18 points in each of the two games.

“We’ve got to win the two on our home court and get this thing back to an even ballgame,” Wallace said.

Sports Writer Jaime Aron in Dallas contributed to this report.

Philadelphia 76ers vs Miami Heat: USA - NBA Playoffs

Live Online Broadcast Tonight
USA - NBA Playoffs

Original Broadcast by ESPN

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Chris Bosh can’t wait to see Philadelphia at its best.

No, not the 76ers.

Series Breakdown

Miami already survived the Sixers’ top effort in Game 1 and held on for the victory.

Bosh wants to absorb the atmosphere at a hostile court like in Philly—from the rowdy fans in the rare full house dressed in matching T-shirts, to the pyrotechnics, and a new pregame video that incorporates live performance elements.

“I’m sure they’ll be ready. They have a reputation, so I expect them to really own up to it,” Bosh said. “We’ve prepared ourselves. We just have to go in there with thick skin like we always have and let the opposing boos really, really motivate us.”

Oh, boy. Just what the Heat need is more motivation.

The Heat beat the 76ers in a close Game 1 and destroyed them in Game 2.

LeBron James is healthy. So is Bosh. Dwyane Wade says he’s “good to go” after dealing with migraine symptoms.

So unless the trio all come down with some sort of mystery ailment that puts them on the bench for Thursday’s Game 3, the Sixers are still in serious trouble. Home court or not.

“We’ve bounced back, we’ve shown resiliency,” Sixers coach Doug Collins said. “I think for our guys, if they could just come out and see the ball in the basket, it would be such a lift for us.”

The Sixers are viewed as little more than a speed bump on Miami’s way to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Heat have said all the right things. The playoffs don’t start until a team wins on the road. The Philly fans are some of the toughest around. No game is harder to win than Game 3.

Give the Heat credit, they believe in good sportsmanship.

The Heat are likely among the few people not wearing a Philadelphia 76ers uniform who won’t concede that this 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference playoff series is Miami’s to lose.

Collins said his team remains upbeat. But unless they can find a way to shut down James, Wade, and Bosh at the same time, the odds of winning a game remain uphill.

“In Game 3, I think their will is at stake here,” Bosh said. “They’re going to come out fighting, they’re going to come out really swinging, especially with that home energy behind them.

The Sixers won 26 home games this year—one less than their overall total from a year ago. The Heat haven’t flinched as the NBA’s top touring act. They led the East and tied for the NBA lead with 28 road victories.

Talent always finds a way to win out over location.

Win Games 3 and 4 in Philly and the series is over.

The Sixers have adopted “showyaluv” as their season slogan. The Heat are ready to “showdabroom.”

“If I came up here and said, ‘We’re trying to win one,’ then people would look at us crazy,” James said. “We’re trying to win both, but Game 3 is the most important one.”

The Sixers had a surprise guest at Thursday’s practice: Chairman Ed Snider, who founded the Flyers, arrived to applause in his team sweats. He watched practice and chatted with Collins before leaving for a scheduled 4 p.m. flight to watch the Flyers play Game 4 of their playoff series in Buffalo.

“We’ve got a really good organization now, the best we’ve had in 15 years,” Snider said.

That starts at the top with team president Rod Thorn, general manager Ed Stefanski, and Collins. Collins, who refused to take credit for the Sixers turnaround, thrust himself into contention for coach of the year honors.

He took a Sixers roster that made only minor changes from last year’s 27-win roster and turned them into a 41-win playoff team.

The Sixers, though, have a roster full of really nice players. Most teams would love to have Lou Wiliams, Thaddeus Young and Andre Iguodala. They’re just not the type of franchise players a team can build a title contender around.

In other words, they’re not The Big 3.

If the Sixers are going to contend against Miami, Boston and Orlando, they’ll have to find that LeBron-esque superstar.

“We’ve gone to 41. Now 41 to 50 is another jump,” Collins said. “To go plus-14 is big. To go plus-nine is huge. You can’t do that by contracting. You’ve got to do that by adding. Sometimes you can add by subtracting. But eventually you’ve got to add by adding. We’re at a point now where we’ve got add by adding.”

But that time is not now.

“We can’t push fast forward,” Collins said. “It doesn’t work that way.”

The Sixers did not boast of “you’ve got to believe” comebacks or sell a fanbase on “anything can happen.” They respect the Heat too much and know—as Collins said after Game 2—the Heat are the better team.

They’d like to simply start small with one win at home.

AP Sports Writer Tim Reynolds in Miami contributed to this story.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Pacers interim coach Frank Vogel is walking a fine line as he tries to keep his team competitive in its first-round playoff series with the Chicago Bulls.

He wants his young players to remain confident after pushing Chicago to the limit in the first two games, yet he doesn’t want them to be satisfied for testing the top-seeded Bulls in a pair of losses at the United Center. Chicago has a 2-0 lead as the series shifts to Conseco Fieldhouse for Game 3 on Thursday.

Series Breakdown

“We’ve just got to guard against everyone in the world telling us how happy they are that we’re hanging in with them,” Vogel said. “We’re 0-2 against them.”

Vogel, still displaying the confidence that has been his trademark since taking over for Jim O’Brien at midseason, said he expects the Pacers to bounce back.

“We’ve stood toe to toe with this team,” he said. “We know we can play with this team, we know we can beat this team. We expect to beat this team in Game 3.”

Vogel figures the Bulls, who had the best record in the league in the regular season, aren’t happy with being in a dogfight against the only team that entered the playoffs with a losing record.

“All they’re hearing is how they’re not getting it done,” he said. “They’re going to come hungrier. We’ve got to come hungrier than we’ve come.”

The Pacers lost double-digit leads in both of the first two games. The Bulls know the games have been closer than expected, but the most important thing is that they can go up 3-0 with a win.

“We just don’t want to relax,” Bulls forward Luol Deng said. “Whether we go out and win by 20 or win by one or whatever, I think there’s always going to be something that we’re going to talk about that we want to get better at. That’s just been us all year, where we’re never too high and never too low. We just know what we want to get to.”

To have a chance, Indiana will need to do a better job against Derrick Rose. The MVP candidate averaged 37.5 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the first two games.

The Pacers have primarily used Paul George to defend Rose, looking to bother him with the rookie’s length and athletic ability while using other players to help. Though Rose has put up big numbers, Vogel said the 6-foot-8 George has done a good job of making the 6-foot-3 Rose work.

George shrugs off the point totals, instead focusing on the big picture.

“I don’t really look at it as, I’m going to come out here and stop Derrick Rose,” George said. “It’s really, I’m coming out here to contain him. That’s really the best you can do. If he goes for 30 shooting 25 shots, I would say I win.”

Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said Rose will be ready for whatever the Pacers bring.

“We’ve seen everything that we’re seeing,” he said. “We’ve seen traps. We’ve seen size on him. He just has to keep doing what he’s doing. He’s doing fine.”

Indiana’s focus on Rose has had a ripple effect. Chicago had a 49-34 advantage on the boards in Game 1 and a 57-33 edge in Game 2.

“They’re one of the best rebounding teams in the NBA,” Vogel said. “Derrick Rose puts pressure on your team to help, for your bigs to constantly be helping, and if your bigs are constantly helping, challenging his shots, then it leaves you vulnerable on the glass.”

Pacers center Jeff Foster said the effort is there, but the execution has to improve.

“We’ve just got to do a better job of putting bodies on guys and coming up with the ball,” he said. “Their penetration puts us in difficult positions, but we have to overcome that and have a total team effort on the glass.”

A big question for Indiana is whether point guard Darren Collison will be available after spraining his left ankle in Game 2.

“Hoping for the best, but we’re listing him as doubtful,” Vogel said. “He’s very sore still. He’s going to try to give it a go. I’m preparing to not have him.”

If Collison can’t go, A.J. Price would start and T.J. Ford would back him up. Price had 13 points in 24 minutes in Game 2. Ford has played sparingly this season, but he scored five points, including a 3-pointer from beyond halfcourt, in Game 2.

“Same focus, same mentality,” Ford said. “I’m a veteran, I’ve been in the playoffs before. I’ve been in this league a long time. You always stay ready and stay prepared. My mentality is to come out and perform.”

Thibodeau said the Pacers will be good either way.

“They have quality depth, not just up front, in their backcourt too,” he said. “They’re a deep team. At the beginning of the year, they had injuries. Now they’re healthy. They’re good.”

Though Indiana is heading home, the Pacers were last in the league in attendance during the regular season while the Bulls were first. With Chicago just three hours away, the threat of a red-and-black takeover of Conseco Fieldhouse was a concern.

“We need to fill the building with blue and gold,” said Vogel, who joked that the Pacers have a plan to keep Bulls fans away.

“We’re going to have metal detectors out there to scan the metal people are bringing in the building, but people who are wearing red … they’re not going to get through the metal detectors, either.”

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Match Preview

Eighteen years later, Real Madrid look to become champions of Copa Del Rey 2011 in the Mestalla at Barcelona's expense.
Real Madrid missed a golden opportunity to shorten the gap from Barcelona in the chase for La Liga's title. La Liga title is surely Barcelona`s now. Wednesday's Copa Del Rey Final match offers a chance of redemption for the Galactico squad and an opportunity to show what they have learnt from Clasico 2010.

Real Madrid's midfielders struggled to keep up with the collective teamwork of Pep Guardiola's Blaugranas. Barcelona dominated the game -except for the last 20 minutes, Barcelona had a 80% possession of the ball- and Real Madrid was saved only thanks to David Villa's poor form.

Jose Mourinho's Madrid Clasico scheme had relative success against La Liga leaders Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu last Saturday. Sami Khedira, Xabi Alonso and Pepe kept Lio Messi and company under control, though the speed of the Argentinean and Spanish international Pedro was a constant headache for Blanco's defenders.

Perhaps los Blancos need a new approach to defeat Barcelona. Angel Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo were forced to assist with the defense often times during the last El Clasico, isolating either Karim Benzema or Emmanuel Adebayor, who were rendered harmless close to the Blaugrana area.

Gonzalo Higuain could also make it into the Copa Del Rey 2011 Final starting eleven, if Mourinho decides to sacrifice power to boost the speed and versatility on the attack.

German international Mesut Ozil was the most unbalancing player in the second half, harmonizing Real Madrid's attack with great success. The first title of the year is at stake, who'll be lifting the Copa Del Rey 2011 on Wednesday night?

Barcelona's goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto has guarded Cule's post throughout the whole 2010-2011 Copa Del Rey competition, but this might not be the only defensive modification on Pep Guardiola's scheme.

"I'm glad I'm back on the team. The last three months have been extremely difficult for me" said Blaugrana's Carles Puyol. He missed the last 25 minutes of La Liga's last game due to a pulled muscle.

His absence would force Guardiola to improvise with Sergio Busquets as Gerard Pique's partner in the back line, and Javier Mascherano at the center of the midfield. Gabriel Milito has not convinced Barcelona's boss in the last games, while Busquests has proven its efficiency as well as Argentina's captain Mascherano.

Xavi will be once again asphyxiated by a close personal mark, though Portuguese defender Pepe might return to the back line to substitute Raul Albiol, sent off last Saturday.

Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lio Messi broke their personal curses against their rival this Wednesday. Messi is the top Copa Del Rey striker with seven goals, Cristiano Ronaldo has six. This is another chapter in the history of a Herculean rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo. Who will lead its squad towards victory?
